MONDAY CLUB

What is the HCA Monday Club?
A group forum for Harvard Club members and their guests. At Club luncheons, we invite a guest speaker to talk about his or her field of professional expertise, followed by discussion/debate.  In Sydney, luncheons are held on the first or second Monday of every month from February onwards. Attendance is usually limited to 20, but more than 20 may attend when there is a particularly compelling speaker or a topic of particularly timely relevance. The guest list may be expanded at the convenor’s discretion.

The emphasis is on informed but informal presentations, and relaxed dialogue. Speakers during 2010 have included Dr Alison Broinowski on Rudd’s Asian Initiative, Steve Killelea on his global peace index, Arthur Sinodinos and Professor Rodney Smith on contemporary Australian politics, Hamish McDonald on Japan, Professor Gillian Triggs on nuclear power, Professor Janet Browne of Harvard on Charles Darwin, Professor Larissa Behrendt on Aboriginal society and crime, Nick Stace of Choice Magazine on the competition between banks, and NSW’s Chief Scientist, Professor Mary O’Kane, on the future of energy in NSW.

Venue
Luncheons in Sydney are held at the Union Club, although alternative venues may be considered depending on the size of the audience. Most if not all luncheons during 2011 are expected to be held at the Union Club at 25 Bent Street, Sydney. Guests gather at the Club library at 12.15, and sit down around a large table in the Club library at 12.30 for the speaker’s remarks over a simple luncheon of soft drinks, sandwiches and coffee. Luncheons conclude around 1.50pm. Cost per person is $25. Business attire is required by the Club.

Announcements of Luncheons and acceptance
In Sydney, the Convenor, Richard Broinowski, chooses speakers, negotiates topics and prepares announcements. These are put out via email by Anderson Knight to members around two weeks before each luncheon, usually with a repeat announcement during the week leading up to the luncheon. Payment is made electronically in response to the notice.

Monday Club luncheons in other State capitals
These seem not to be held on any regular basis at present, but Richard is very willing to share his knowledge and help set up similar events in other Australian cities. They are a good way to enjoy fellowship among Harvard alumni in Australia, and provide excellent discussion with informed speakers about matters of contemporary importance in Australia and relevance to Harvard alumni.
